History

The Ridgeway Church of God of Prophecy began in a small community called Nazarene in Lemon City, a pioneer community in the NE section of Miami, in 1922, as a mission under the ministry of the late Evangelist Andrew Bullard. Shortly after, the late Bishop J.R. Smith served as pastor until 1930. He was succeeded by Brother Ed Rolle, who pastored until about the mid 1930’s, when the late Bishop J.R. Smith returned and served again until 1939.

The Liberty City church was built at NW 19 Court and 62nd Street on a property donated by the late Evangelist Andrew Bullard. The late Brother Hermis Ferguson pastored followed by the late Bishop Henry Curtis for about two years. The late Bishop Theophilus Hunter pastored from 1943 to 1944, followed by the late Bishop J.D. Williams from June 1944 to June 1962. In 1955 on October 31st, the late Brother J.D. with his wife, the late Sister Willie Mae Williams, his Son, Carl and Deacon R.M. Barrett began negotiations on the current Ridgeway site as a more modern edifice for the Liberty City Church. They presented a $150.00 binder on the site for which Brother J.D. mortgaged the family home. Purchasing proceedings began in 1956 with final mortgage payment being made in 1959.

The late Bishop Randolph B. Davis pastored at Ridgeway for nine years followed by the late Bishop George H. Knowles, who pastored for fifteen years.

The longest serving pastor of the Miami Ridgeway Church of God of Prophecy was Bishop Eustace S. Clarke. It was in December 1957, in the muck of Belle Glades, Florida when the word was preached and the song “I Surrender All” was sung, that Bishop Eustace Clarke gave his heart to the Lord. Afterwards, his only desire was to be like Jesus and please him in everything. Little did he know, God had so much more in store for him. He met and married his wife Emily Pauline Bannister on March 25, 1962. In the year of 1964, God called him into the ministry. With humility, he accepted the call. He prayed and persevered through 55 years in the ministry.

Eustace’s service to God began as Pastor of the Indianapolis Church of God of Prophecy in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1964. He also served as Pastor of the Miami Centerville Church of God of Prophecy for 7 years and the Homestead Church of God of Prophecy, in Homestead, Florida for 10 years. During this time, a fresh anointing was dispatched from heaven and he was elevated to the level of Bishop, which he felt was a great honor to have and hold.

Bishop Clarke served as senior pastor of the Miami Ridgeway Church of God of Prophecy for 35 years. While serving at Miami Ridgeway, in 1999 a new move of God overshadowed him and the vision for a larger sanctuary was birthed. Groundbreaking for this endeavor began in 2000 and by the grace of God the current “House of God” was dedicated in June of 2009.

Bishop Clarke pastored faithfully until he closed that chapter in his life and formally retired from the ministry, However, he continued to be a moving part of Miami Ridgeway as a member until his death on June 21, 2020.

In the spirit of one of his favorite songs, surely the work and life he lived speaks for him, and may all who come behind him find him faithful.

Other pastors throughout the history of Miami Ridgeway Church of God of Prophecy include: Pastor Gerald Jones from 2019-2021, and Bishop Arthur Wilson, Jr. (Interim) from 2021-2023. The present pastor is Bishop Byron Hughes, 2023-current. Miami Ridgeway Church of God of Prophecy has been dedicated to providing spirituality, service and guidance to the Church and greater community of South Florida. Miami Ridgeway Church of God of Prophecy endeavors to stand as a beacon of resolve, inspiration and worship for many years to come.
